Sluice gate harbours and dike construction in "Groot Hus"

The exhibit in "Groot Hus, a granary built in 1840, is titled " Land and Sea" and shows the history of the North Sea coast drainage sluices, harbours, dikes and and navigation. Two new sections on coastal fishing and North Sea tourism have been opened recently. Activity stations invite children and adults to experiment with loading ships, tying knots and navigating.

Shipbuilding and naval craftsmanship in the "Alte Pastorei"

Shipbuilding and naval craftsmanship are exhibited in the "Old Vicarage”on the west side of the historic harbour. The permanent exhibition in this building – which was also used as a granary in the past – presents typical maritime trades in the sluice harbour: shipbuilder, rigger, block-maker, rope-maker, sail-maker and ship's blacksmith. Life-sized models illustrate these professions in typical scenes and documentary film footage let these old trades come alive.

Life on land in the "Captain's House"

In the "Captain's House" built in 1803 you can plunge into the past. In the exhibit "Life on Land" life between land and sea is illustrated in a pharmacy, a sailor's pub, an old dry goods store and a collection of seamen' souvenirs from distant ports. The parlour and kitchen give the impression that the captain and his wife had just left the room.

Historical rescue station at the "Friedrichsschleuse"

The first rescue station at the “Friedrich locks” was opened in 1865. The present building dates from 1910 and served as a rescue station until 1945. The lives of 25 sailors were saved by the crew of the lifeboat in that time.
Today the restored rescue station at the Friedrichsschleuse is a part of the Sielhafenmuseum. The multimedia exhibition in German, English and Dutch provides insights into this dangerous era of rescue at sea in rowed lifeboats.
In the tourist season the rescue station is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm.
